Pets are not living longer, healthier lives. Surprised? It's true. Our pets are simply taking longer to die from chronic disease and poor health. And for many animals that process starts very early in life.

The reasons are simple. Part of the reason is that we believe the blatant lie that processed pet food equals good nutrition, and we load our pets up with toxins. The result is the chronic diseases we see today in increasingly younger animals.

Illness starts with signs we mistake as "seasonal" or normal. Maybe your pet gets "hot spots" and rashes during the summer. Or has chronically smelly ears and runny eyes. Or has teeth covered in tarter and breath that could stop an elephant in its tracks. These are not signs of good health!

When you understand what good health really is and how to achieve it, your pet will live longer and have quality of life. You will also save a ton of money and heartache in the process!

The Role of the Professional Pet Sitter in Pet Hospice
Monday October 25 — 5pm EST
Lauren Urbais
Lauren Urbais, M.Ed.

Lauren Urbais is the owner and founder of Pyewacket's Purrfection In-Home Pet Care, and has been providing in-home pet services throughout Sonoma County since 2003, specializing in providing care for senior pets, those with medical needs and in-home pet hospice services.

In addition to operating her successful pet sitting business, Lauren volunteers extensively at BrightHaven Animal Sanctuary in Santa Rosa, California working with special needs animals and assisting with hospice care. She is currently co-writing a book on pet hospice with BrightHaven founder Gail Pope and was a presenter at the International Symposium on Veterinary Hospice Care at UC Davis last September.

Lauren is also a Level III Animal Reiki Practitioner/Teacher and holds a Master of Education degree from National University, Sacramento. Her continued passion for pet hospice has led her to become Outreach Coordinator for BrightHaven where she is developing a community program to bring qualified teams into the homes of pet guardians to assist with pet hospice care and training.

As the demand for pet hospice services continues to grow across the country, professional pet sitters have a vital role to play in providing in-home support services for pet guardians. Companies are also emerging in the ever growing pet bereavement industry that are now offering pet hospice services and contracting for these services from veterinarians and professional pet care providers. By offering pet hospice services we can provide pet guardians the option of not only spending more time with their beloved pet as the end of life nears, but to assist them with proper pet care when they might otherwise not be able to do so in a world of hectic work schedules and long commutes.

  • Participants will be introduced to the skills needed to add pet hospice services to an existing pet sitting business.
  • Learn about the complicated emotional landscape involved with clients while working in pet hospice and how to remain empathetic and avoid burnout.
  • You will be introduced to the business aspects of providing pet hospice including needed equipment, scheduling considerations and a specialized pet sitting contract addendum for your use.
  • Learn how to move past our human fear of death to understand that the journey of pet hospice with a beloved animal companion can be a beautiful and growth promoting journey of love, trust and peace.
  • Develop an understanding of the physical and behavioral changes that occur during the final stages as companion animals near their transition and how this information helps you assist the client.
