Walk With Mary

Walk With Mary

3 years of experience.

Background & Experience:

Growing up, I always had pets and I loved dogs. My heart still melts every time I see one. Also, I loved to walk. In fact, my whole family were walkers. My family didn’t own a car until I was in high school. I walked everywhere I went. I love the fresh air and the exhilarating feeling I get from being outside. You can see where this is going right? Well, not quite. I’m a little slow on the uptake. You’d think that dog walking would be an obvious choice as a career for me. The thought never occurred to me until a few years ago. I live in an apartment building that allows dogs. A friend of mine needed someone to watch her dog while she was on a trip. What a trip that was – for me!! I couldn’t believe I was actually getting paid for doing the two things I enjoy most. Pretty soon I accepted other offers from other neighbors and I was in business. Well, not exactly in business, but well on my way. I finally decided to take the plunge and build a real dog walking business. I entered an education program to learn more about it. I was flabbergasted at all of the knowledge required. Not just about surety bonds, insurance, and business related things but the animals themselves. You’d think you would only need to know how to walk a dog to be a dog walker but not so. In order to rise to the level of a professional, where people can trust in you to handle any situation that may arise with their pet, you must be well trained. There are so many things we need to recognize, keep abreast of, and be prepared to handle – like health problems, behavior issues, and emergencies. I became certified as a professional dog sitter by The National Association of Professional Pet Sitters (NAPPS), the nation’s leading nonprofit professional pet sitting organization. I continue my training through additional NAAPS follow-on courses, as a member of the Association of Pet sitting Excellence (APSE), local seminars, and of course private practice. It’s so exciting getting to know all of the different dogs I play with each day. Every dog is unique and has something to teach us. It’s almost like they can talk – their body language tells so much about how they feel, what they want, and what they enjoy doing. I would love to get to know your pet too!
